Crown Mouldings, also referred to as crown moldings have been around for centuries. Though the materials that the mouldings are made from have changed, the benefits of these mouldings have not.
Crown mouldings are typically installed over the seam that joins the ceiling and wall together. They can be installed for architectural appeal or as a masking for cracks or other imperfections.
Traditional moldings were made from wood or plaster. These mediums crack, split, twist, and decay overtime. The Superior Crown Moulding line is made from very high density polyurethane. Polyurethane is a hard substance that mixed with the right technology allows for beautiful architectural features or replicas to be created. Superior Mouldings will not warp, crack, split, twist, or turn overtime. They expand and contract less than 1/3 of what wood will do.
The Superior Architectural Accent line includes crown mouldings, decorative rails, flexible mouldings, ceiling medallions, and many more elements that supply the finishing touches to any room. These products (excluding flex moulding) come with two coats of white primer, so they are ready to be installed with your preferred paint color or installed as is.
No matter if you have a “cookie cutter” style or a tailored made custom home/building, mouldings can help set your room(s) apart.
Mouldings create an elegant finished look for any room.
Design Ideas:
Depending upon the application, mouldings can help raise the ceiling or help lower it. Chair rail mouldings can be installed underneath crowns to create countless designs and sizes. In the picture below, the customer stacked the UT-5318 ontop of the UT-9867 to create a larger profile.
Also, moulding can be used in conjunction with the Superior Faux Wood Beam Line. The UP-5350 was used in the tray ceiling along with the T-20A faux wood beam. This created a very warm inviting atmosphere.

No Matter if you are looking to install faux beams in a single family home or a 10,000 + sq ft restaurant, Superior faux wood beams can easily change the look and feeling of a room or a whole building.
Today’s Feature Friday posting spot lights a multimillion dollar spec home in South Florida. Safari Stone, worked with the builder to design the below elaborate layout.
By installing the replica beams and coral throughout the home, the builder created a breathtaking Mediterranean atmosphere. When walking from room to room, it’s hard not to imagine the home atop the cliffs of Italy overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
The time weathered rustic faux wood beams used in this project were the: T 25 , T 30, T 38, along with several M 30 Rustic Corbels and S 02 faux iron straps.
Today’s feature Friday show cases Jay Leno’s personal garage.
In the recent one hour premier episode of Garage Mahal, Jay Leno installed several Superior Faux Ceiling Beams along with a number of other great products.
The two Superior Faux Ceiling Beams used in Jay’s garage were the T 25 and T 20.
Best known as the The Tonight Show host and an avid car enthusiast, Jay Leno takes Garage Mahal behind the gates and into his home to help convert his unusable 6 car garage into a car owners dream.
The largest renovation in Garage Mahal’s history will feature 20 beautiful time weathered faux wood beams ( 13 – T 20A & 7 – T 25). In addition to the beams, Jay will have a 22 foot in-floor turntable (so backing in or backing out of the garage is no longer an issue), custom mahogany doors, fingerprint recognition & universal remote, just to name a few things.
As you enter through the doorway, you are immediately taken back by the ceiling souring into the sky. Large time weathered rustic beams over head, in a breath taking wagon wheel pattern. These beams look like they weigh 1000’s of pounds, and have been aging in a barn for decades.
The real secret is that no trees were harmed in the creation of this memorable ceiling. These faux beams or false beams are made from quality polyurethane, which make the ceiling beams very light weight, and easy to install. The beams over head weigh a fraction of what real beams weigh. With the average faux wood beam weighing less than 15lbs, this ceiling has less than 150 lbs of faux beams attached to it.
With the faux wood beams being so lightweight, you do not have to worry about reinforcing the ceiling.

Unlocking Your Homes Hidden Beauty With Crown Molding
Fort Lauderdale, Florida, November 19, 2009: Superior Building Supplies, one of North American’s leading producers / distributors of Faux Wood Beams, Crown Moldings and high quality millwork products, announced today the introduction of their new pre-mitered crown molding corner kit.
In today’s economic climate, saving time and money is a necessity. The Superior Building Supplies pre-mitered corner kit was designed with this in mind. The headaches and frustrations of cutting that perfect 90 degree inside or outside corner are a thing of the past.
Each corner kit will create one inside or outside corner. Simply remove the two pieces of molding which have been pre-mitered on both ends. Look at the identifying markings that show which end creates the inside or outside corner. Then simply cut off the mitered side of the molding piece that will not be used. This is a simple straight cut and this will create a butt joint for the straight molding to tie into. Glue or nail your pre-cut molding corner into place and you are finished.
The Superior Millwork line, including the new corner kits, are shipped with two coats of white primer, so the moldings, medallions, etc are ready for painting, gel-staining, or even instalation as is.
The Superior Building Supplies product line is available almost anywhere quality millwork products are sold. To learn more about the miter kit or other Superior Products, please contact the Superior Customer Service Team at 888-328-9232.
Today’s Feature Friday highlights an out of the box design concept that really changes a room’s atmosphere.
Traditionally when thinking about installing faux wood planks, the idea of installing them along the ceiling is the first thought that comes to mind. Often when the planks are used along the ceiling, faux wood beams are then installed over them to add additional depth.
In the below picture, the designer intented to create a western style game/bar room. The house has traditional moulding running throughout but a room with a different feel was desiredfor the entertaining area.
The T 28 faux wood ceiling plank was used as a door surround in this picture. In addition to the door surround it was used as the backsplash for the bar area and a decorative accent under the bar table top. The PM 12 plank was used as the window surrounds and baseboards and was installed with a 45 degree miter cut to create a perfect frame. To continue the flow of this western style room, the PM 09 was used to join all of the planks together. The PM 09 is the smaller plank that connects the PM 12 window surround and baseboard to the T 28 door surround.
To help the transition from the game room to the remaining of the house, the UT 9805 crown molding (moulding) was installed along the ceiling.
As a side note, if you are considering designing a similar i style room, faux wood corbels provide a great design aspect under a countertop & or bar area.

In today’s video we will be highlighting the proper techniques in cutting and inside crown moulding corner, with a miter saw. By following these easy steps you will save money by reducing the waste factor and save a great deal of time and frustration.
As you can see from our miter saw with have labeled the fence with photos that show the proper positioning for an inside and outside 45 degree corner. These images are available for download at www.superiorbuildingsupplies.com There is a link for these photos in the description. (See photos Above)
We are now ready to make or first cut. As the picture shows we will now turn our saw to the 45 degree mark on the left side.
When cutting decorative crown moulding, remember you always want to cut the moulding upside down. Make sure that the moulding fits firmly against the fence and table. The fence acts as the ceiling and the table acts as the wall. As the instructions on our fence show, we will save the left hand side of our cut and discard the right had side.
We are now ready to make our second cut we now swing the table around to the left hand 45 degree market.
We now look again at our instructions on our fence for the outside corner. We see after making the cut we save the left hand side of the cut and discard the right. As with our first cut it is very important that we fit the moulding firmly against the fence and the table. This will ensure the moulding is cut on the same angle as our first cut.
By following these simple techniques you now have an outside corner that is virtually seamless once installed.
Few Things to Remember When Cutting You’re Outside Corner
Use a saw blade with 96 teeth or more. This will create a sharp clean cut on your moulding.

Terminology Diagram for Cathedral Ceiling
The below video will walk you through the step by step installation instructions for installing faux wood beams along the peak of the ceiling.
For step by step printable instructions for the peak, please click here.
Now that we have the faux beam installed along the peak, it is now time to install the beams along the rise. This can be accomplished easily by utilizing a piece of cardboard that is a 1-1/2 to 2 feet long and a utility knife.
Step 1: Hold the cardboard along the ceiling starting where the ceiling and wall join together.
Step 2: Fold or cut the edge of the cardboard until it fits flush against the wall and ceiling.
Step 3: Place the cardboard onto the end of the faux beam and trace the pattern.
Step 4: Cut the beam along the traced marking, using a saw or utility knife.
Step 5: Install the beam along the rise as a standard installation. For standard installation instructions please click here.
